Congratulations to WTC member Carla Forbes, who won the triple jump at the USATF World Youth Track & Field Trials in Myrtle Beach, SC, yesterday, June 29!

Her winning jump of 42′ 1 1/2″—the best jump ever by a Massachusetts high school athlete—earned her a spot on Team USA, to compete in the World Youth Championships in Lille, France, next week. She will train with the team in Myrtle Beach, before flying to France this Saturday.

To even compete at the World Youth Trials, athletes had to have met a US qualifying standard. To be eligible for the World Youth Championships, they also had to meet a World qualifying standard and finish among the top 2 (of other World qualifiers) at the Trials. The Team USA selection staff then chose those athletes that they felt had the best chance to score in Lille, based on previous years’ results.

More than 1000 athletes, ages 16-17, from as many as 175 countries will participate in the World Youth Championships.
